The Fall Round Up 3200

11/23/2015

The 2015 Neal Van Gelder, Memorial 3200 proved to be an outstanding weekend!  For this Fall Round up we had 20 competitors who showed to represent their shooting abilities. Matt Chezem drove the furthest coming from Colorado Springs, Colorado; where he had been training to represent the 2016 US Olympic Team!  The weather for both days was also very beautiful getting into the high 80’s with light to mild

wind conditions staying around 2-5 mph mostly out of the North, with very few direction changes.  However, more beautiful than the weather was Matt’s scores! Utilizing iron sight both days he managed to shoot a perfect 3200 score!

Due to the lack of competitor turnout (Only 4 shooters showed) this match was cancelled and turned into a friendly practice event.

However, I am Looking forward to the 68th annual Neal Van Gelder Fall Round Up to be held next weekend (the 21st & 22nd) I know there will be many competitors shooting for the opportunity to earn their sweat shirt!

October PTO

10/24/2015

We had some very close and competitive prone shooting at this weekend’s PTO! I had a great start in the morning with solid 10's in the sighting and preparation period, then I heard it... The wheels of Jr shooter Matt's gear bag, oh how he loves to be fashionably late, though his tardiness was understandable with the activities of the CHP fitness test, occupying our only access point into and out of the rang.  Anyways, by the time he was setup I had already posted my first two competition strings a 99 & 98.

All competitors shot incredibly well, and I would love to share pictures however, my digital camera seems to have met its end two nights earlier... Just FYI concrete floors are not healthy for any piece of modern technology.

The match results are as follows:
Kurt                       590 with 34 Centers (scope)
Matt                     587 with 27 Centers
Cameron             586 with 31 Centers
Mike                     584 with 28 Centers
Jober                    584 with 27 Centers
John                      580 with 23 Centers
Rodger                 579 with 23 Centers
William                567 with 14 Centers

All eight of these competitors shot extremely well!  And after the competition they continued by shooting a 20 shot practice prone final.

3 Position Team Event

10/3/2015

Picture
Not to be outdone, the Senior Team (age 60 and over) of President John Giles and junior coach Darrell Malstrom also exceeded the existing National Record scores of the same 2  3-Position matches which are also being submitted to NRA as new National Records.  Well done to the old guys!!!!

National Records may be established only in Registered NRA Tournaments approved ahead of time, and quite a lot of paperwork with a variety of witness signatures AND the shot targets and backers must be submitted to NRA for re-scoring and acceptance.

On Saturday I was pleased to run a 3-Position competition using A-50 targets for our juniors and others that showed up.  The Intermediate Junior Team (ages 15-17) of Matt L. and William M.  exceeded the existing National Record scores of 2  3-Position (prone, standing and kneeling) matches which are being submitted to NRA as new National Records. Well done!!!!
Picture
Both matches were won by the USAF, Cam and Mark, 544 and 533.  M1 top individual scorer was Mark, 277, and the M2 top scorers were Matt and Cam, 276.

High prone scores were Jober and William, 99, John and Jober had 98's.  High standing was Mark with a 92, next was Cam with an 89.  The kneeling high score was Matt with a 98, next ones were 92's-Matt again, Cam, Jober and Cam again.

We appreciate Jober shooting along with Ellie, so we had a good number of teams.

John may be shooting elsewhere for the Nov. 7-8 match, so we may have to "dig up" another senior from somewhere.  Hope everyone else can make it. Any ideas for another senior, even someone who shoots high power? Hate to lose those senior records when they are there for the taking.(Nov. 7-8, 4-P, one target each day for each position, big A-23  50 yard targets.)

In the meantime, while the real men were shooting 3-Position, others were shooting a Mini-Palma Club match using F-Class rests.  This match uses properly reduced International Palma 1000, 900 and 800 yard centerfire targets to be shot at 100 yards with .22 competition rifles.  Out of 450 points Bobby DePasque shot 450, Phil Massoris 448, and Richard Blankenship and Sgt. Ray Del Rio shot 446.  All really good scores!

The next NRA junior(open to anyone) match will be November 7-8 and will be for 4-Position(prone, standing, kneeling and sitting) competition on A-23 targets. Come out and join the fun!

September PTO

9/26/2015

Windless, is the best way I can describe the weather this morning.  For those that do not know the Prone PTO event always comes first and an opportunity to shoot on electronic targets is always welcomed in my book.
As you can see in the photo to the right we had many great scores fired, I was lucky enough this weekend to shoot a 597! However, I must admit I was ammo testing and was using a rifle scope rather then the iron sights like the other competitors.

It was also great to see a three way tie among our top three finishers, John, Mark & Jober all with 584's! the winner was decided by X count first so we had Jober &
Picture
John with matching scores. We then had to use the Creedmore rule to see who had the most inner tens in their previous string and again that was a tie... And this score breaking process continued until we had Jober as the winner. Personally I would have liked to see a shoot-off!

David Kimes 3-P & Prone Regional Championship

3/28/2015

Saturday morning March 28th California’s best marksmen gather to test themselves at the 2015 David Kimes 3 Position and English Prone regional competition.

The day begin with the famous command “Shooters to the line” and within five minutes the firing line was full of experienced shooter waiting to hear their next command. “Your preparation period has ended.  Is the Line ready?  The line is ready, commence fire”

A little over an hour later we found that our very own Darrell Malstrom won the day in prone with an amazing 564 out of 600 possible points; however, just two points behind was an Air Force sharp shooter, SSgt Rodger Scrivner.  Keeping the completion close were George Feucht with a 559 and Sam Thoman with his 558.

As the Prone shooters were packing their gear and headed home after the first day of competition, the three position shooters set up for their next event.  Standing.  The champion of the first day of standing was Anna Weilbacher, who scored a 377 out of 400 possible points! It was also Anna who would lead the way in the Kneeling event with a 382.  Not far behind though were Matt Liao with his 376 besting SSgt Keating from the Air Force shooting team with his 375.

The second day started off nearly the same, except for one minor change. It was any sight day, and that means competitors could proceed to their trusted rifle scope.  That’s just what Darrell Malstrom needed to shoot his 586 and take home the Gold Medal! George Feucht just 13 points below in the grand aggregate secured the Silver and SSgt Scrivner won the Bronze. Below are the final results:

English Prone Results:
Day 1          Day 2          Final Results
GOLD - Darrell Malstrom         564 c13     586 c33      1150 & 46 Center Shots
SILVER - George Feucht          559 c8       578 c22      1137 & 30 Center Shots
BRONZE - Rodger Scrivner     562 c12     563 c21       1125 & 33 Center Shots

The three position shooters continued their struggles for the second day, and Anna Weilbacher captured the gold medal by once again being unbeaten in both the standing and kneeling positions shooting an Olympic worth score of 1155! Not far behind finished SSgt Cameron Keating with his 1122 which was enough to earn the silver medal and Matt Liao finishing third with his score of 1090.

3 Position Results:
Day 1              Day 2             Final Results
GOLD - Anna Weilbacher       11137 c33       1155 c40        2292 & 73 Center Shots
SILVER - Cameron Keating     1115 c29        1122 c34         2237 & 53 Center Shots
