Photo's & Article Posted By: SSgt Cameron Keating USAF Shooting Team Member Yet another wonderful day for competitive shooting. The 2017 Captain James Hill Conventional Prone 1600 kicked off with wind from start to finish. The wind speeds averaged 3mph for the day with gusts up to 15mph, despite the frequent changes of direction and velocity all the competitors still had an amazing time.
Bobby D. was the victor of this rule finishing in 2nd place with a score of 1578 & 100 X’s. Our F-Class Champion John Giles proved that 10’s are the most important aspect of shooting finishing with 1579 & 95 X’s.
While the Prone Competitors have larger and sometimes easier targets, the competition was not nearly as close. Cameron Keating finished in third place with a score of 1595 & 117 X’s, just one point below Jim Gaines who bested Cameron with not only that one point but 8 additional X’s. Jim managed an amazing 1596 & 125 X’s. which earned Jim the Silver Medal and tittle of 1st Place Master. Our Champion However proved that a 1600 can be accomplished in all weather conditions, not only that but Allen Thomas shot a near perfect 400 & 39 X’s on the first event of the day! Who says 22 lr’s aren’t accurate? Allen Thomas (Photo, Right) mastered the day with a 1600 & 126 X’s. until next time, I will be on the range training. Hope to see you soon!! Photo's & Article Posted By: SSgt Cameron Keating USAF Shooting Team Member “The most fun I have had watching a shooting event” A comment I overheard from one of the parents after the completion of the 2016 California Rifle & Pistol Association and USA Shooting State Championships. Unlike my other stories I would like to start by giving a special thanks to Darrell Malstrom and Sam Thoman for setting up and hosting our competition and preparing all the electronic targets prior to the match. I would also like to thank Jober Velasco who called the firing line commands during the 3-Position competition, his professionalism helped make this a wonderful event. I give my thanks to all the competitors who attended especially the dedicated who drove all the way from Northern California to experience our facilities in preparation for the USA Shooting National Championships.
From the Men, we had Matt Liao shooting an 1114 out of a possible 1200 points, Cameron Keating with 1113 points, Mark Gould with 1098, Gordon Taras with 1079, and Erick Vazques with 1071. Emily Capual led the ladies shooting an impressive 573 out of 600 possible points, Anusha Pakkam followed with 562, and Darien Torrison with 541. The 3-Position Final where the winner receives the California Bear Trophy is where the competition got really interesting. We fast forward to where all competitors where in the standing position Matt Liao had a 0.5 point lead he fired off his 17th shot, a 9.7, giving him a score of 409.1, Emily Capaul match his 9.7 not losing any ground but not closing the gap either. However, Anusha Pakkam shot a 10.9 on her 17th shot and that does close a gap! Moving her 1.2 points closer to the silver medal. On Anusha’s 18th shot everything changed, she fired a solid 10.3 that vaulted her into the Gold medal Position while Matt scored a wide 7.7 dropping him into a Bronze medal position. Shot 19, Emily Scored a deep 10.5 moving herself into the gold medal position holding a score of 428.3 exactly one point over Anusha wh0 was 0.2 points over Matt Liao… Unfortunately for Matt he was eliminated after his 19th shot, earning the Bronze Medal, and High Jr. award. With one final shot to go both Anusha & Emily took amazing shots, and the board changed once again, Anusha Shot a deep 10.5 giving her a final score of 437.8 while Emily scored a 9.2 this locked her into the silver medal and High Woman Award. With only a 0.3 point difference Anusha Won the gold medal and prized California Bear Trophy.
Congratulations to all competitors and once again, thank you for supporting our sport! Photo's & Article Posted By: SSgt Cameron Keating USAF Shooting Team Member A cool and calm weekend it was… or so the competitors of the 2016 CRPA Smallbore State Championships wished... Today the winds picked up and took off in all directions. This made the state championships a challenge for even the best marksmen. Changing winds kept all the competitors on their best behavior but all of that came to an end after the first stage of the 50 meter match. Last year’s state champion suffered the greatest defeat losing 13 points here. Even though the conditions were challenging for every competitor it would seem that Allen Thomas had the solution finishing the day with an amazing 1599 and 121 X’s. This great score gave Allen a 9-point lead over the nearest competitor Randy Teissedre. On day two of the state championships Allen held his lead securing another score of 1599 with an impressive 142 X’s in spite of the winds being as challenging as yesterday. John Giles moved into the silver medal position with his 1595 and 93 X’s and Lt. Col. Mark Gould (USAF Shooting Team) finished the state championships with the Bronze medal shooting a 1593 and 101 X’s. Allen Thomas 3198 & 263 X's Match Winner (Pictured on Right) John Giles Silver Medal (Left) Lt Col. Gould Bronze Medal (Right) As for our F-Class competitors we have a tight game with a 2-point separation between Bobby and Mel after completion of the first day. Bobby Depasque finished with a 1568 and Mel Flint with a 1566, but a two-point lead means little on these hard metric targets if not properly supported. Mel showed impressive wind reading skills on day two of the championships shooting a score of 1584 while Bobby’s 1554 granted him 2nd place. Mel Flint 1st F-Class (Pictured on right) I would also like to congratulate our young rising star Anusha Pakkam, a Jr shooter whos dedicated parents drove her all the way down from the San Jose/Sacramento area, so that she would win the California Smallbore Jr. Championships. With an impressive score of 3141 with 140 X’s. Jr. Champion Anusha Pakkam (Pictured on right) Photo's & Article Posted By:
SSgt Cameron Keating USAF Shooting Team Member Hello,
After we finish shooting on July 9th, the LAR&R Jr Club will be holding its yearly club meeting and BBQ. The meeting is meant to bring everyone up to date about the state of the club, its finances, and to elect club officers for the next year. Prior to the meeting we will be having a hamburger / hotdog BBQ. Please bring your favorite hamburgers, hotdogs or sausages to be cooked on our grill. The club will supply the buns, condiments, utensils and plates. Please also bring a 2nd item, such as chips, fruit salad, potato salad to share with everyone. Some additional items of note, 1) Please bring outdoor chairs to the club meeting if you have any that are easy to transport. We do not have enough for everyone to be seated while eating. 2) The Jr club will not be shooting on the July 4th weekend. We will be shooting on the July 9th and 16th Saturdays. 3) The Jr club will not be shooting on the Labor Day Weekend. We will be shooting on the September 10th and 17th Saturdays. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. See you at the range, Darrell Malstrom As has so often been true in years past, the first weekend of April held many surprises for the athletes who dared to test their skills at this year’s Capt. James Hill Smallbore Conventional Prone match at the Los Angeles Rifle & Revolver Club. Held April 2nd and 3rd, 2016, this 3200 point NRA Regional match saw some of Southern California’s most talented riflemen going head-to-head to determine who would take home the final honors.
In the sling division, newly-minted Master Michael Nies threw down the gauntlet early, with a 400x35 in the Dewar. Before the day was over, though, Allen Thomas and Randy Teissedre, both holders of multiple California State Championship trophies, would take over 1st and 2nd places with a 1597x117 and a 1596x111, respectively. Mr. Nies ended the day in 3rd with a 1595x112. Going into Any-Sight Day, Mr. Thomas would continue his domination, shooting a 1600x129 to secure his victory and one of the three required legs for his Smallbore Distinguished award; Mr. Teissedre remained in 2nd place/First Master, shooting a 1598x134. Third place went to Lt. Col. Mark Gould, US Air Force, who started the day in 4th, but posted an excellent 1597x129 to take the bronze by just one point. Over in F-Class, veteran shooters Mel Flint and Bobby DePasque battled it out over the two day event. Despite outstanding shooting by Mr. DePasque, Mr. Flint won seven of the eight fired matches to claim the aggregate victory by fifteen points. Join us for our next match on May 21st and 22nd, as we kick off the 2016 CRPA State Championship season with the Southern California location of the CRPA Metric 3-Position (NRA Rules)/60-Shot English Prone match. The CRPA Conventional Prone 3200 follows on June 4th and 5th. ![]() The results are in as the sun sets over Arizona, A challenging time for all the competitors of the 2016 Western Wildcats, a 6400 conventional prone match fired over 4 days. Competitors from all over the country came to compete and support this match held March 16th to the 20th at the Ben Avery Rifle Range in Phoenix Arizona. Members from our very own LAR&R club and former Jr. Team Member, Matt Chezem, put on a good show throughout the competition. Simply put, there was incredible scores posted by incredible shooters! And I am honored to be among these great shooting legends. Of the competitors from LARR: Kurt Ingham competed in the mix of “FA” of Scope only shooters and finished strong with a 6353 and 381 X’s John Giles finished with a score of 6361 and 382 X’s placing 5th in the Master Category Cameron Keating finished with a score of 6379 and 463 X’s; Cameron earned a 1600 Wildcats sweatshirt from shooting clean on the final day of competition. But was only able to place 13th among the High Master Class. Jim Gains finished with a 6387 and 483 X’s competing in the Scope only category this earned him the 2nd place title of the FA shooters. Allen Thomas finished with a score of 6391 and 548 X’s; Allan earned a 3200 sweatshirt cleaning both days of the Any sight competition. And placed 8th in the High Masters. ![]() Matt Chezem (Pictured Left with Nancy Tompkins) scored an amazing 6396 and 546 X’s; Matt would have earned a 1600 Wildcats sweatshirt shooting clean on the second day of competition; however, his amazing shooting during all 4 days of the event gave him the title of Champion of the 2016 Western WildCats! With all the amazing scores posted by our sling shooters we cannot forget how well our F-Class competitors did: Phill Missouris, Bobby Depasque, and Ray Del Rio. Unfortunately, I do not have the F-Class competitor scores from the Wildcats, so I am unable to comment, But I would like to give Ray Del Rio a special congratulations for Winning the 2016 Metric Nationals F-Class Competition! SSgt Cameron Keating USAF Shooting Team Member During our last competition Semco Salehi took some time to write a great story about Michael Nies one of our club members at LAR&R. Mikes interview was published today, so if you have a free moment please read article at: I Am An Angeleno.
Sincerely, SSgt Keating, Cameron What a spectacular weekend! Sunny and 75 degrees, with a snappy wind condition that would keep most shooters on the edge for the full two days. I could not ask for better weather condition for the 2016 Vic Auer 2400 Conventional Rifle Tournament. Minus my personal brain malfunction on the 2nd target of the event I performed well too. However, I did not perform nearly as well as this weekend’s Champion Randy Teissedre who shot an outstanding 1199 on the first day and a max 1200 on day 2. Great shooting Randy!!! Furthermore, the event was a close match with a three-way tie for second place between Mike Nies, Jim Gaines, and myself shooting 1194’s with a mere one point lead over John Giles. The final results can be found here: Left Photo- Mell Flint Gold Medalist F-Class & John Giles. Right Photo - John Giles & Jim Gains Bronze Medalist. Left Photo- Cameron Keating Silver Medalist & John Giles. Right Photo - Our Champion & Gold Medalist Randy Teissedre & John Giles. Special Awards This year we had two special award categories, the first award shall be known as the “Grumpier Old Men” and our grateful recipients were Randy Teissedre and Bobby De Pasque. We must also give John Giles a hand for being our "Top Shot" placing the most bullet holes through that poor wind flag... Photo's & Article Posted By: SSgt Cameron Keating USAF Shooting Team Member Due to the busy holiday season the PTO for December 26th is cancelled. However, the rifle range is still open and training will still commence.
