LAR&R Club - 236 NRA National Smallbore Rifle Records
(2 pending recognition by NRA)
- Mel Flint
This week the NRA verified the National Team Records the Club members set during the January 23-24 and 30-31 2 Person Team Matches.
Amanda McMullin and Kevin Sui set a total of 13 National Team Records
during these 4 days of competition.
Most of the records were for the Intermediate Junior category, but during
the Any Sight 50 Meter Metric match, they set the Open, Civilian, Junior
and Intermediate Records. Many of these new Intermediate Records were
already held by LAR&RC Juniors from past years.
In reviewing the NRA
National Records website as of 4-15-10, we find that LAR&RC current
and recent members, including coaches, now hold a total of 234 NRA
National Smallbore Rifle Records, Individual and Team.
Are we good or what?
Two pending records are set by Kevin Sui at the 2009 NRA National Match at Camp Perry. They are the 240 shot metallic sight aggregate and the 480 shot metallic and any sight aggregate for conventional prone. These are the only few records that Mel did not have to do any paper work. |

Range Maintenance Work Largely Done...
Our rifle range was closed on April 6-8, 2010 for maintenance. Work completed include up keep of the impact earth berm, 3-Position area wood baffle for prone, and installing the posts to support wood baffle for the Bench Rest users. There is till more work to be done to complete the bench rest baffles. But, the work is largely done.
We would like to recognize and thank the work party of our elderly members: Ray Del Rio, Mel Flint, James Gains, John Giles, Bobby DePasque, Phil, and Randy. There was hard labor these gentlemen performed - shuffling earth on top of the berm! We solute you! There also underwent substantial planning work lead by the mentioned fine exemplary members. James Gains and Bobby DePasque have also contributed large sum of money towards this maintenance efforts.
When you see these gentlemen next time, please shake their hands and say "thank you."

2010 Western Wildcat News: LAR&R's Eitan Barazani (MA) Won 1st Master 6383-503x ! LAR&R's Junior (Int. Jr.) Sharon Barazani (MA) won High Junior 6369-420x ! She narrowly missed a podium finish by 2 points finished 4th in the Master Class. It is worth to mention that Sharon won the Master Class on Day-3 when the conditions were not favorable to many strong shooters, her dad for one, placed 3rd that day. Job well done to the Barazani family!!
LAR&R had a strong showing this year, James Gains and John Giles just barely missed the prize table but shot very respectable scores, 6322-326x and 6315-333x respectively. Our old friend - member, Doan Trevor was there too. Finally, Ray Del Rio shot in the F class finished 3rd place with 6377-447x out of 8 competitors.
Job well done LAR&R! Great representations of our club from the young to the old. Thank you. |

World Famous Martini Match - March 27, 2010 9:00 a.m.
Richard wants me to remind everyone that the world famous Martini Match will be held Saturday, March 27, 9AM. The match rivals the Internationally renown* Master of the Universe Match.
Any English falling block .22 long rifle ammo rifle is allowed (and I bet if you showed up with a .22 l.r. American falling block rifle, maybe even a Kenyon, you could fire that, too).
Match 1 a Dewar with iron sights and match 2 a reverse Dewar with any sights. $5 entry fee.
Richard has come up with a very clever trophy for the match. But, no special apparel for the winner. Of course, maybe that would mean more entries with a trophy instead of er, uh, whatever.
Mel
*Over the last several years I have been contacted by shooters in
Europe who collect
badges, pins, brassards, etc. I dig through my drawer full of stuff from
the last 40 years and send them 8 or 10. Recently a chap from
Italy sent a note,
and with the stuff I sent him I sent the Club website. At that time the
first thing on the News was about the MOTU match. In his broken English
he asked about it, as it must be important, and about the special
"apparel", he thought maybe a shirt or hat or something. It was kind of
hard to explain.

NRA Registered Two-Man Team Match Metric Prone 1/30-31/2010
17-year old NRA "Open" National Record for 50m any sight (two-man team) was broken this weekend! Kevin and Amanda shot 793-52c on this match and improved the Open record by 2 points (record pending NRA recognition).
While things did not exactly happen the way some predicted last week, history was made differently this weekend, somewhat unexpectedly, but not surprised. Besides the kids, the more-ancient senior team brushed on their own previous records (by 1 point) a couple of times and decided to leave them the way it is. I will have more detail a little later.

NRA Registered Two-Man Team Match Conventional Prone 1/23-24/2010 Staff writer - Mel Flint
Wow, did you miss out!!
Kevin and Amanda set 4 conventional prone Intermediate Junior 2 Person
Team Records last weekend. Irons 100 yard, and any sight Dewar, 100 yards
and 50 meters. The LAR&RC Juniors now own ALL of the Intermediate Junior
Conventional 2 Person Team Records!!! Well done!!
Next weekend they will try to get the few remaining Metric 2 Person Team
Records for Intermediate Juniors. If they do, they will have ALL of the
Intermediate Junior 2 Person Team Records in both Conventional and Metric
- BE THERE TO SEE HISTORY MADE !!!!
Now, "The
Rest of the Story" - During Match 4, Any Sight Dewar, the kids shot
793x54 and beat the old record of 791x52. At 100 yards, Kevin had a liner
9 at 6 o'clock and an 8 on the line at 6 o'clock. SK ammo, of course.
But they still beat the record.
The Senior Old Rifle
Team, shooting a Martini and a Doan Model 52C, came within 1 point of
tying the record for any sight Dewar, 1 point of tying the 100 yard and 2
points of tying the 50 meter records. Old guys with old rifles are still
hard to beat. They won 2 of the matches Sunday.
Jeff Tandy, late of NASCAR,
teamed with the Italian Adonis, Bobby DePasque, and they won one match.
New coach Matt Koehler had his hands full coaching his father. Pushing
ahead, Matt ignored all the complaints about sore elbows, sore arms, sore
necks, bad wind and crummy ammo to shape up the Prez.
Thanks to Bob and Hammer for stat office duties.
NEXT WEEKEND, JANUARY 30-31, METRIC 2 PERSON TEAM MATCHES.
WE WILL TRY TO SET SOME MORE JUNIOR RECORDS, SO BE THERE TO
HELP THE KIDS HAVE ENOUGH TEAMS TO COMPETE AGAINST. Bring a team
mate, or shoot with someone looking for a team mate.
8:30 AM, SATURDAY IRONS, SUNDAY ANY SIGHTS. DEWAR, 100
YARDS, 50 METERS EACH DAY. RAIN OR SHINE.

Second place was LAR&RC's
Vice President Richard Blankenship who was behind by only 1 point.
The last 2 years the famous award was won and worn with great honor by
LAR&RC's Kurt Ingham.
We all look forward to pictures of Bobby with his latest award, one of
many awards won over the years.

meeting and speak up. Tuesday October 27 @ 6:30 p.m. Veterans Memorial Park, In-Door Basket Ball Courts Town Hall Meeting
See a link of the range for details http://www.bristowmarksmanshiprange.webs.com/
A quote of WHAT YOU CAN DO from that web site: "Friends, its no doubt that this is our Alamo. Those in the city who want to shut us down have found the perfect storm to try to convince the city council that the range is a liability, health hazard or just 'too much trouble" to operate. If you feel that the Bristow Marksmanship Range is important and worth preserving please contact the City Council, write a letter, make a call or and make your voice heard at this up coming town hall meeting . Jim Jimenez, Director of Parks & Recreation Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. (323) 887-4434 Email Mayor Joe Aguilar and tell him this sneeky sudden closure of the Bristow Marksmanship Range by City Administrator Jorge Rifa is unmerited, lacks transparency and NOT in the best interest of the City of Commerce.

2009 CRPA State Metric Prone Championship this year was held at the Lemoore Sportsman Club smallbore range in Lemoore, California. It is about 31/2 hours north of LAR&R. It was a great match. Tim Stone was the organizer and match director, he summoned a large crew to man the stat office and worked very efficiently. Among the volunteers, many were LSC juniors. They did not get to shoot the 1st day as they worked. We appreciated their help very much.
Eitan Barazani, Matt Koehler and Kevin Sui competed in this match from southern California.
Eitan Barazani won the State Champion title and the prestigious bear trophy with 2349-100c. Kevin Sui placed 2nd and won the State Junior Champion title and 1st place of Expert Class with 2325-101c. Matt Koehler was awarded 3rd place of Expert Class.
Kevin also broke two National Sub Jr. 50m records. He was said to be the 1st set National Records at the Lemoore rifle range.
Congratulations to all! Job well done.

Kevin Sui was also awarded the 2009 National Smallbore Rifle Position Sub-Junior Champion title on July 25.

competitors.

Many LAR&R athletes are competing in the Western Wildcat Smallbore rifle
prone match in Arizona this week. This is one of the largest rifle matches
in the western United States held annually. We have heard great results
about our shooters from this match. Sharon Barazani, a intermediate junior,
is winning the Sharpshooters Class with a day 2 score of 1596. Amanda
McMullin, another intermediate junior, shot her first 1600 in day 2 anysight
match! Ray and our other senior shooters are doing well too!
We, who did not have the opportunity to attend this match, are proud of all of you. Keep up the good work, see you next week when you come back. |

The 215 National Records you saw a few weeks back in the news, it is going
to increase by quite a few now. Great Success in the New NRA Conventional Prone 2400 match!!! There were 19 scores of 400 during the 2-day match held at the LAR&R Smallbore Rifle Range on February 21-22, 2009. Match winner is Amanda McMullin, a junior (intermediate), who scored 2396x188. It was a tight race, Sharon Barazani, another junior (intermediate) was trailing Day 1 winner Amanda by only 13x; Sharon had 1197x76 and Amanda got 1197x89. Day 2 went similar ways, except this time the runner up Matt Kohler (also a Junior) was only 1x less than the Day2 winner Amanda who finished 1199x99. The two day aggregate top three are: Amanda McMullin 2396x188 Matt Kohler 2394x175 Sharon Barazani 2392x155 many of these could be lasting NRA National Records!
What is also worth mentioning is that Amanda and Sharon shot with iron sights for both days! Wow, Juniors Rule!
Eitan Barazani took the Master Class with 2387x170, Matt Kohler claimed Expert Class winner, and Sharon Barazani owned the Sharpshooter Class. Joseph Stevenson, yet another junior won the Marksman class 2309x74, welcome to the 2300 club, Joseph. Bobby DePasque shined as high Senior with a solid 2383x124.
Ray Del Rio ran the line.
Many new Senior, Junior, Open, Civilian and Women National Records are established in this match. Mel and Helen were already busy on the targets before other shooters left the range on Sunday. Next time you see them, give them a hug, they did a lot of National Record processing in the past year. Thank you.

January 2009 In reviewing the current NRA National Records Website, Mel Flint finds - LOS ANGELES RIFLE & REVOLVER CLUB CURRENT AND RECENT MEMBERS HAVE LISTED ON THIS DATE 215 NATIONAL RECORDS (1/26/2009) National Records come and go over time. While LAR&R Club members have 215 National Records on the website on this date, other shooters exceed some of our National Records, and we continue to set more. This is the most that this Club's members have held in it's history as far as we can find. The total number of National Records this Club has held over its 100+ year history is impossible to find, but it must be many, many more.

LAR&R Club 2009 Annual Members Meeting If you did not have the opportunity to attend, a few pictures are available for your viewing (but, it is better to be here next year). The new Stat Office building impressed many long time members who hasn't frequented the range recently. Among many strangers, guess who showed up? The Linn's family! Charlie shot the club match before the meeting too. The Club welcome all of its members new and old to have a great shooting year, and I will tell you what they tell me "Just keep it in the middle."

Shooting sport is important for our future Olympics and other international competitions. What LAR&R Club has offered is a great opportunity for youth & the public, the community and people young & old to enjoy competitive shooting sport. The closest facility of this quality is the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado. Please keep and nurture this vital asset." Thanks for every one who made the effort to make it there that evening. At this time I would also like to ask you all come out to the next meeting on 1/29/2009. A location is not determined yet, I have called several times. But as soon as they decide on a meeting place, I will broad cast an email and posted here too. Mean time here is a link you can find this upcoming meeting: http://watershedconservationauthority.org/plans/whittier_narrows.html You can also call Miguel Luna at 818-568-9139, or We invite everyone to join with us in planning for the future! Public participation works! Last meeting proved it. All members should come out to the next two meetings to show your support for the shooting sports and the future of our smallbore rifle range. If you love your sport, you need to voice out, speak up and shout to make your point. More importantly make your point at the upcoming public meetings. We cannot afford to regret and complain about losing our rights after the fact while we forfeit out opportunity to take part in the planning process. So, come out! |

The results were compelled today as there were three locations hosting this State Junior Olympic Championship. LAR&R hosted a part of this match at The Range in Fresno. We wish to thank the owner of the fine facility and his staff for the early mornings on a weekend.
Mr. Ray Del Rio served as the match director and Mr. Tim Stone ran the line. Mr. Doug Koehler officiated the match as USA Shooting licensed official.
Kevin and Amanda both qualified for the National Junior Olympic Match at the US Olympic Training Center in April. Kevin qualified for both events. They wish to thank their coach Mr. Ed Knutson and the coaching team including Mr. David Kimes, a former US Olympian and World Champion, for both technical and mental preparation up to the last minute before departing for competition. The kids know without them, it would not have been possible. |

17 possible new National Records! Los Angeles Rifle & Revolver Club hosted a NRA Regional Championship Conventional 4-Position on 12/27-28/2008. 17 possible new National Records were produced during these two days. Mel Flint mailed these record out yesterday. "Writers cramp!" he says, referring to the paperwork for the records submittal. Thanks Mel!
Mel some time ago added all the national records produced at this Los Angeles Rifle and Revolver Club Smallbore Rifle Range, he came up with 187. He passed around a flyer to remind everyone how good this club is. Well, Mel, now I am certain that we have well over 200 National Records providing that your original count was accurate. We just got better.

Possible New National Junior Record! LAR&R 4-man Junior team set a new possible National Record on 50m Metric Prone Smallbore rifle outdoor any-sight yesterday. The members of the team are Sharon Barazani (Int. Jr.), Amanda McMullin (Int. Jr.), Matt Koehler (Jr.), and Kevin Sui (Sub Jr.). During this two-day 4-man team match held at the LAR&R Smallbore Rifle Range on December 13-14, 2008, the Junior team scored 1543 in match-6 50m (A50) targets. The standing National record for this event is 1539 set on July 14, 1991. Congratulations to the junior team!
The junior team would also like to recognize and thank Mel Flint for organizing and directing the match, as well as sort through all the paper work to submit the targets for NRA approval and recognition of this record. They also would like to thank Ray Del Rio for setting up this match a year ago.
The Senior team consisted of Mel Flint, Richard Blankenship, Bobby DePasque, and James Gains. Although no record broken this match. They came real close, a few points away at times from their own records set a year or two ago. Depending on who you ask, you would probably get different answers. Nonetheless, it is all their own records if you look it up on the NRA website. When our senior team breaks their own records, they are all happy for they did better; when they don't, we congratulate them for successfully defend their title. Congratulations, LAR&R senior team! |

We have several members of LAR&R live in the most recent fire torn areas. It
is our great concerns of their well being. Should anyone established contact
with these members, please drop a email to
larr.smallbore@gmail.com.
We already have inquiries from some of the concerned members. Once I
hear from you, I will respond to those with kind thoughts.
The level of care and kindness of our fellow members demonstrated that LAR&R is beyond a regular social or sports club, it is more like a family. We appreciate this, particularly exhibited by our elders. We are certain this will positively influence our youngs and add a lesson that may not be learned at school. |

Doug Koehler rented an U-Haul today moved good quality cabinets, and a
wheelchair ramp for the Stat Office to our range. He spent almost all day to
take these heavy articles down and loaded into the U-Haul and fighting
through the super heavy brush fire traffic just before SR-57 was closed.
Although our club is blessed with the new Stat Office, thanks to Doug;
however, completing this project and making it accessible would otherwise
incur substantial cost without Doug's efforts today. He obtained these
necessities to complete the access to the Stat Office free of charge to the
Club, once again. Thank you Doug, you are the best! Many people stayed to
help unload these materials, Matt Koehler, Matthew Cegelski, Bob and Amanda
McMullin, Kevin Sui, and several Junior club members too, just to name a
few. Thank you all! We recognize and appreciate your contribution to the
club making it a better place for all members to enjoy.
Doug mentioned that there is more to be done to bring the remaining part of the landing over to complete the project. |

The Master Class winner goes to Pete Church, 3173x193. Pete scored 1594x100 on the first day and 1579x93 on the 2nd day. Pete is a Michigan "snow bird" from Arizona and a 2nd time visitor to LAR&R Smallbore Rifle Range. Great shooting Pete! You earned an automatic invitation to come back and shoot with us anytime you want.
Sharon Barazani, another Intermediate Junior, took the Sharpshooter class with 3147x161. She produced such superb results as a sharpshooter with iron sight on both days! Just like her dad, Eitan, the winner of this match. Sharon scored 1590x107 and 1557x54 for this two day match.
All Juniors performed superbly given their level of experience.
The High Senior title goes to James Gains this year as he produced a 2-day aggregate of 3141x150. He scored 1567x65 and 1574x85 for this two day match. Jim demonstrated that wisdom and experience can give the shooter an edge as he improved his result in tough conditions while many others gave more points today. Good job, Jim! We also thank Jim for his frequent hard work around the range with Ray Del Rio and others to keep it clean. Shannon Draeker won the High Woman title with 3130x126. Shannon is a Sub Junior and scored 1581x81 and 1549x45 for these two days. Shannon also shot both days with iron sight. She was not available for photograph today. Good Job, Shannon! Juniors Rock!!!
We thank all participants, particularly competitors from far away, Rick
Curtis and Pete
On behalf of all shooters, we would like thank Ray Del Rio, the Range Master, Doug Koehler, Bob McMullin, and Hammer Sui for running the Stat Office. Oh! that's right, we activated our new Stat Office today! Thanks to Ed Knutson and Matt Kellerman for the fantastic electrical work, Joe Wagener also helped. Ed spent more than 8 full days on the task to bring electricity to our new building. Many thanks Ed!
See you next year!

Mr. Kimes reported about the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area Master Plan Update public workshop held last night at the South El Monte High School. "Having Amanda and Kevin there gave an excellent impression of the sport. A lady from the Army Corps of Engineers was there taking copious notes interviewing or questioning Kevin and Amanda during the multiple discussions phase of the meeting. She has a 12 year old daughter and is interested in getting her familiar with shooting. Doug mentioned that we had Olympians from our club at the 72, 76, 80, and 84 Olympics, he introduced me as a World Champion and world record from 1974 and 1978, and mentioned the college partial and full scholarships that some of our junior shooters had earned in the past ... This took away most or all of the negative feelings that some may have had about the SHOOTING ranges. On the boards around the perimeter of the room, in sets of three, were representative photos of the various sites and uses of the park areas. For shooting they had a fellow in a field aiming a large .45 pistol. No safety baffling, nothing. Not a proper image. Doug corrected that impression in his comments, saying we do not allow pistol shooting, only smallbore rifle and air rifle shooting in controlled disciplined situations. So, all in all it was very positive for the LAR&R site. Hard to imagine how it could have gone better." - David Kimes. |

LAR&R was represented at the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area Master Plan
Update public workshop by Mr. Doug Koehler, Mr. Ray Del Rio, Mr. David Kimes,
Mr. Bob McMullin, Mr. Jim Glass, Ms. Doris, Mrs. Sarah Sui, and more importantly
by two of LAR&R's own
youngsters Amanda McMullin and Kevin Sui. There were 10 working groups at
different tables with maps, stickers and other materials to plan for what
would be the "better" use of the park. Mr. Koehler delivered a nice
introduction of who we are, what we do and how frequently the facility is
being utilized. He clarified some things following comments by other members
of the public. He also introduced Mr. Kimes, a former US Olympian from LAR&R.
Mr. Kimes was well received by the audience and many came and greeted him.
Our young ambassadors did a fabulous job promoting the LAR&R club by placing green stickers (meaning "support") on the maps. Amanda, Kevin, along with Sarah were interviewed by a facilitator. Amanda expressed her appreciation of having this wonderful smallbore rifle range available to her. She also spoke about her experience and growth in competitive shooting sport and how it improved her academic standing. Sarah spoke from aspects of how discipline, respect and life learning values, not just skills, are passed to the young generation from the distinguished elderly members of the club. Hammer Sui was the 1st public member signed in at this meeting and he filled out the survey and made a written a statement appreciating the diversity of sporting facilities that exist in the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area before he left for another meeting. In his statement, he highly valued the smallbore rifle range and clay shooting range. Other members of the club assisted in sending announcements of the public meetings to members. Thank you all, you did a fine job. There are two more public meetings scheduled for January and March 2009. We hope to see more turn out of our members. Oh, Good job Amanda and Kevin! |

NRA has encouraged Clubs to have the new
Regionals this
year for the "Conventional 3-Position and 4-Position" which uses the A-23
target at 50 yards instead of the A-50 target at 50 meters.
LAR&R is trying this out with the 3-P Conventional REGIONAL this coming
weekend, the 18th and 19th. 40 shots each position as usual, irons
on Saturday, any sights
on Sunday. NRA EQUIPMENT so anyone can shoot as you do not have to
have the International stuff.
Come out and give it a try. NRA wants to know the interest in this, and
this will allow you to get in on the ground floor. Sign up at the range,
or better yet, give Ray a call so he can get a head start on the squadding.
714-777-4585.
If you shoot this match, the Club President will give you a personal tour
of the new Range House, the
Koehler Hof !!!! Such a deal !!!!
