LAR&R coaches are out there at the Olympic Training Center for more than one week. There is also the Certified Training Center business to be discussed on this trip. We thank our coaches for their dedication, personal time, and other sacrifices they make to help our youngsters. Have a safe trip back!
LAR&R 64th Fall Roundup 3200 SB Rifle Championship was a success!
Top quality scores posted given the rainy conditions by top shooters. 27 competitive riflemen, young and old from as far as Arizona participated in this event, a tradition for over six decades. Eight young shooters competed in this year, for nearly half this was their first major match. This is very healthy for the shooting sports and LAR&R Club having its own juniors moving up from the Junior Club. Many thanks to the hard work of our Junior club coaches, Bob McMullin, Jim Glass and David Kimes.
This year's Match Winner is from our Junior Club - Matt Chezem! He scored 3193-229x Congratulations. John Giles fired 3186-210x for the second place finish and took the Expert Class. Rick Curtis won the Master Class with 3184-219x. Phil placed 1st in the sharpshooter Class with 3144-155x. David Higgins, as usual, captured the Marksman class with 3168-200x. Matt Chezem the newest State SB Rifle Metric Prone Champion!
Matt only shot smallbore for a couple of years and he pulled it together on this match with 1148-41c on the metalic sight day and 1164-40c on the any sight day, winning with 2312-81c. His performance is good enough for both the State Junior Champion and the State Open Champion titles (Matt is a Jr).
Amanda McMullin took second with 2290-71c, Kevin Sui came in third 2281-79c.
A scoring glitch gave Mel Flint a 200 point advantage shooting scope on the any sight day, score board reported that Mel shot a 1372 points out of 1200 possible. Was Mel a happy guy that day! Eventually, stat office had to change his 2533-111c to 2333-111c, which was still very respectable score on metric targets.
Summer fun - learn how to shoot a rifle
Ask Mom or Dad to bring you out to LAR&R Summer fun, Saturday morning. Many of junior shooters at our club starts shooting at the age of 9 to 14, some starts later. This is where a whole family can have a good time bonding and learning.

For thoes who missed it, it was a very nice day and a great time spent together as you can see everyone was engaged in serious conversations. Food was plentiful, although some made really last minute arrangements. Join us next time, the 4th of July weekend.
We should do this more often, get the kids and the parents out too.
As to the Martini match, James Gains out shot everyone and won the Martini glass trophy. Here is a picture of satisfied Jim. Thanks to our photographer - Phil.
6/8/2011- CRPA California State Conventional Prone Rifle Championships at LAR&R Club
Just a few weeks before the NRA National Match at Perry, California fired its State Championships match the past weekend. Sixteen shooters with 5 juniors competed in this event. There was great joy seeing some of LAR&R’s new juniors become competitive and rattle some of the old hands. The competition for the title was between two juniors, Amanda McMullin and Matt Chezem. Conditions were challenging on day one of the match, Amanda edged out the rest of the field by six points. Day two was calmer and more pleasant to shoot. Matt out shot Amanda only by four Xs scoring 1597-119x, but was not enough to recoup day one’s loss. Matt settled with 2nd place and Amanda won another “Bear” trophy. At the award ceremony, others had to gave Amanda some hands to hold the “Bears” and the Junior State Championship plaques as she also crowned the State 3 positions title. Congratulations.
The top three shooters: Amanda McMullin 3185-219x, Matt Chezem 3179-219, and Jeff Tandy 3166-189x. Olaf claimed the Sharpshooter/Marksman class with 3123-128x. Jemma Capelli, a subjunior shot her first 3200 match and posted 3042-94x! She won the High-Woman award. This young shooter was so happy after shooting 199 for her personal best on 100-yard target, well, her 3rd 100-yard target ever shot.
For the F-Class, Ben Serebreni topped the rest with 3174-203x

This is a split match conducted simultaneously in the north 14 shooters competed in the South, eight shot 3-positions. Five of the eight who competed in 3-P were juniors. Jr.) scored 1147-40c, Amanda McMullin (Jr.) shot 1145-33c, and Matt Chezem (Jr.) posted 1142-42c, excellent job! Cash Donation Honoring Mr. Vic Auer began to come in
Cash donations honoring Mr. Vic Auer began to come in. LAR&R Club is tremendously honored to receive such funds for the USA Shooting Certified Training Center. The junior rifle competitors are immensely grateful to these gifts. The recount of these success stories (the few that I know) of young people are reasons for us to celebrate Vic's life. His dedication and contribution to the shooting sport have set a great example for us to follow. His tremendous success in the shooting sport will always serve as an inspiration to young athletes. May his soul rest in peace with the Lord, his smiles stay with us in our hearts.

3/15/2011- STACY UNDERWOOD, a former LAR&R junior shooter, now Assistant Rifle Team Coach of University of Kentucky - 2011 NCAA Champion!
I first met Stacy when her parents brought her to me and asked "How long would it take her to learn to shoot Smallbore Rifle?" She had already shown great promise as an Air Rifle shooter at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim and need Smallbore skills to make her moreattractive to the NCAA Title 9 programs at that time. When I met Stacy I was immediately taken by her enthusiasm and willingness to learn and work to achieve greatness. The short version is that within less than a year, Stacy had multiple California State Championships to her credit and was signed by the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for their rifle Team by then Coach Launi Meili, an Olympic Gold Medalist, during a visit to LAR&R by Launi for that purpose. Stacy was a great credit to Nebraska in the following years and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Very shortly thereafter she was approached by the University of Kentucky with the possibility of pursuing a Master of Science Degree in her chosen discipline and an opportunity to funcition as an Assistant Coach of their Rifle Team. I was one of the first to learn of this opportunity and was thrilled as was Stacy. The result was her finishing her Master of Science Degree at the University of Kentucky at Louisville and being retained by the school as a Full-Time Assistant Coach of their Rifle Team; the results of which are now apparent. I am extremely proud to know Stacy and her family and fondly remember some of our earliest accomplishments together. I have yet to meet someone whose work ethic exceeds hers. - Ed Knutson, Los Angeles Rifle and Revolver Club, Photo by Sarah Scherer of TCU Rifle Team. http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/c-rifle/mtt/underwood_stacy00.html
3/6/2011- USA Shooting Resident Athletes training at LAR&R Club successfully concluded
click on the photo for a slide show
USA Shooting resident athletes concluded their four day training with Coach Ernie Vande Zande at LAR&R Club - A USA Shooting Certified Training Center. The weather conditions was near optimal, four days of 60 to 80 degrees weather and 8-12mph wind on the last day of training really required the athletes to put all their wind-learnings to use. This group of young people, National Champions, 2008 Olympian, World Champions, National Team and National Development Team members, are not only dedicated and hard working, but also warm hearted towards supporting local junior shooters. They made a contribution to LAR&R CTC after learning that we are raising funds for electronic target systems. Mr. Ray Del Rio accepted the check and didn't know what to say as the CTC were supposed to support them and their training. These champions are bigger than life, on and off the firing line. Thank you!
Several LAR&R junior shooters were invited to train with the Team, Kevin Sui and Matt Chezem (photographed above) enjoyed the learning at a new level. USA Shootings grass root initiative is both effective and beneficial. LAR&R also coordinated this Team training with an Open-House on March 5, 2011. The event was very successful both in terms promoting the rifle sports and fund raising. We want to thank our supporters for their donations. While we have a long way to go, we have made progress. We are going to continue our efforts and take the show on the road to meet with our prospective supporters. Meanwhile, all of you can help with ideas and your connections. Drop a note at larr.smallbore@gmail.com, visit www.larrclub.org.
Just as the Olympic Training Center resident athletes train, we had three new juniors going through their Firearm Safety Training behind the firing line. The safety training is a prerequisite to rifle learning at LAR&R Junior Club

lot of photographs to share with you, stories of the young shooters growing up.
And how we connected juniors with the shooting sport.
Established in 1906, LAR&R Club is a USA Shooting Certified Training Center. Our Junior Division has served hundreds of young people for their firearm safety and
rifle training. Last March, we hosted 250 boy scouts shooting in one day. Young
Marines, Civil Air Patrol, and other young competitive shooting athletes also
use this range on a regular basis.
Our guest list includes LA84 Foundation, LA Sports Council, Southern California
Committee for Olympic Games.
We plan to raise $90,000 to equip the Certified Training Center with 18
electronic targets to better serve our young shooters and future champions.
Thanks to the friends of LAR&R, we have raised funds for the 1st unit. Soon you
will be able to see it in action.
Note: Due to Olympic Training Center resource needs, the National Rifle Team will not bring electronic targets with them this time.
2/18/2011- LAR&R welcomes USA Shooting National Rifle Team to train at the Certified Training Center!
This year's International rifle competition is extremely important to Team USA as it tries to secure the remainder of the Olympic quota slots for London 2012. LAR&R is privileged to have this opportunity serving our National Team’s training needs. For those club members who would like to try their luck on an electronic target, the National Coach, Dave Johnson, welcomes you to explore how it works and may be shoot a few rounds with it after the Team training. So, monitor this page for schedule of availability. This will be a great opportunity to showcase what our fundraising effort is for.
LAR&R CTC is pleased to announce that it is moving to 50m Electronic Targets!
Coach David Kimes of the Certified Training Center is excited to report to the developing shooting athletes that he has began selection and acquisition of the very first unit of the 50m rifle Electronic Target. We would like to thank our supporters; their donation is making a difference. Our plan is to raise $100,000 to fill every firing lane of the 3-positions range with electronic targets. We are confident that it is going to happen! Currently, the CTC successfully raised sufficient funds to acquire the first unit. But we still have a long way to go; we will continue our efforts and urge all members too to reach your connections supporting our future shooting athletes, in order to continue the legacy and dominance in the world in the shooting sport. Send donations to: LAR&R CLUB, note “electronic target”, and mail to Ray Del Rio, 5918 Hadrian Cres., Anaheim, CA 92807.

2/5-6/2011- Victor L Auer So. Cal NRA Conventional Prone 2400 Match
This year's match was a three way battle, no one could tell who would be the winner. While Richard Blankenship lead most of the way on day one of the match, the last 50m target just wasn't going his way. Jim Gains took day one lead by a narrow margin. Day 2 was almost a repeat of day one, Blankenship was shooting well (considered that he just survived a major surgery) with a comfortable lead, at this point no body has seen Randy Houser could move to the top yet. Jim and Richard continued there battle. Comes the 50m target again, you hear this roar from the firing line, Richard shot a "miss" finished his first 50m target with 190-15x.There goes all hope for the win, Jim isn't going to give. He is a very good meter shooter. To his surprise Randy was quietly keeping to his heel. Having worked so hard for the past few months, not shooting much, Randy had a hard time on day one; But today was a different story, Randy like a swimmer from lane 8 sneaked by every body took the match. Jim had to settle with the High Expert. Phil shot his way to the High Sharpshooter/Marksman without much challenge. Mel Flint took the High F-Class. His wife Helen while did not out shoot him in aggregate, shot a 200-20x on the F-Class 50m target. Great job everyone, hope to see you all at the next match. Mr. David Kimes handed out the awards. 12/1/2010 - LAR&R Rifle Range stays!
LAR&R Rifle Range is here to stay at last!
Those who follow the development know that in the 1996 Master Plan, the rifle range was proposed to be relocated for more soccer fields. After long and persistent efforts in persuading the planning officials to keep our range at its current location through attending public workshops, public hearings by Club officers and concerned members, we succeeded! The 2010 Master Development Plan Input (MDPI) Draft EIR showed that the planners decided to keep our range where it is, for the historic value, legendary tradition and excellent community service provided. Click to see TABLE 4-3, Comparison of Projects in the MDPI and the 1996 Mater Plan.
"4.3.4 PROJECTS PREVIOUSLY ANTICIPATED
Some of the proposed facilities and improvements discussed in Section 4.3.3 above and in the
MDPI were previously considered and planned under the USACE 1996 Master Plan. Table 4-3
provides a comparison between the proposed MDPI facilities and improvements and the
projects anticipated in the 1996 Master Plan. For the purposes of this
Program EIR, it is
assumed that facilities proposed under the existing 1996 Master Plan (that
have not been
implemented to date) would no longer be implemented and that the proposed
facilities and
improvements in the MDPI would replace, not be in addition to, those
planned under in the
1996 Master Plan." Page 4-16 of the 2010 Master Development Plan Input (MDPI) Draft EIR

9/8/2010 - Over the weekend, Al Robinson, supervisor of Area A, came by to visit. We asked about the above dates and what was happening. He said Sept 12, Sunday only, was Mexican Independence Day celebration. We need to come in the back gate off Rush, 7-9AM. Have your membership cards ready.
September 25, Saturday only, is the annual County Employee picnic. There will be about 8,000 employees in the park. Parking will be in Area A, even on the soccer fields. He suggested we keep our gate closed so they do not try to park in the range area. I will get a clip so we can hook the gate, not lock it, so it will be closed, but you can still get in. If other cars get into the range area, the range will have to be left open so they can get out later.
The back gate off Rush will be open to us 7-9AM, bring your membership card. He suggested we get there early. The range will be open for practice for members. It looks like the junior program will be canceled that day.
Once you leave the range either day, it will be difficult to get back into the park. - Mel Flint
9/7/2010 - Donald Lush, Southern Cal. Metric Prone NRA Regional (2400) Concluded.
Matt Chezem won Gold Medal scoring 2304-92c, and Kevin Sui took home the Silver Medal with 2301-85c
8/27/1010 - Ray has contacted the park office about the upcoming park closures and has this information to relate to members:
- Reminder, the rescheduled Metric Regional 2400 is next weekend, September 4-5, 8 AM starting time. Be there on time or the RO Richard Blankenship will show no mercy.
- September 12 and 25 there will be park events so we will need to come in the back gate off Rush Street between 7 and 9AM. Show your card to the gate keepers.
- December 25 the whole park is closed and locked. Even Phil will not be able to shoot, new Christmas rifle or not.
- January 1 the park is open so the World Famous MOTU Match will occur as scheduled. Maybe now it should be called the WFMOTU Match.

USA Shooting National Team & National Junior Team members of the U.S. World Shooting Championships Team concluded training at the LAR&R Regional Training Center - July 14, 2010
Coach Ernie Vande Zande and 8 members of the rifle team have been training at this Regional Training Center since Sunday, July 11. Our own Sharon Barazani is among the 8-member team. Coach Ernie and the members of the team highly praised the conditions and the up keep of the range facilities. On behalf of USA Shooting, Coach Ernie thanked everyone at LAR&R for supporting this training event. "The conditions served us extreamly well" he said. LAR&R RTC is very fortunate to have this opportunity to support the U.S. World Championship Team's training needs prior to their departure to Munich, Germany. A top level wind camp was conducted in both theory and practice. A number of LAR&R junior shooters benefited from this as well.
During this training camp, the Team also had an opportunity to listen to Coach David Kimes (Head Coach of LAR&R RTC) about his experience of six World Shooting Championships appearences. World Shooting Championships is once every 4 years.
We are so proud of these young men and women, the hope of this country, who brings pride, honor and medals to the United States. Members of the U.S. team who trained here at this Camp include: Jamie Beyerly, Amy Sowash, Michael Seery, Scott Franz, Samantha Trisdale, Michael Liuzza, Ryan Dunham-Bender, and Sharon Barazani. Before they left after the final day training, these young people got together, contributed over $400 out of their own pockets for the LAR&R RTC towards the acquisition of an electronic targeting system! What a group of Champions both on and off the rifle range! Mr. Ray Del Rio accepted the contribution on behalf of LAR&R RTC. Thank you very much! We wish you all the best at the World Shooting Championships in Munich! You are alway welcomed at this training center.

Range Improvement - The seniors had done it again.
As recent as last year, the club saw increase in Bench rest interests. To accommodate the public and members’ interests, the club added 10 points for bench rest shooting at the middle section of the range. A secondary baffle is constructed to supplement the primary wood baffle, further enhancing range safety. The construction took a while as each piece of the wood needed weather proofing, and the posts needed cast concrete base. All this work was done by the elders of the Club: Ray Del Rio, Bobby DePasque, James Gains, Phil Massouris, and Mike Tuck. Thank you, gentlemen!
Shake their hands when you see them next time, the work they have done was hard labor. May be you could help on the next project.
